True Platform: Independent Syrian Fact-Checking and Countering Hate Speech
True Platform is an independent Syrian initiative specializing in fact-checking and combating misinformation. It was founded by independent Syrian journalists in March 2023 and is one of the projects under the Info Check Network (ICN).
Our team monitors news, analyzes it, and verifies its accuracy to help recipients think critically and make informed decisions.
The True Platform project aims to enhance public awareness of the risks of deception and hate speech, as well as to build a more responsible and free media environment.
Syria, in general, faces deep divisions that have had negative effects on social cohesion. Ethnic-based diversity further hinders societal understanding and impedes any progress toward future democracy.
The conflicting parties in the country control a significant portion of the media, alongside affiliated networks of pages and accounts on social media. They systematically exploit misinformation and fuel hate speech, taking advantage of the limitations of independent media and the public’s lack of awareness about deception detection tools or the ability to discern hate speech.
Given this reality, our team envisions fact-checking as an independent journalistic function, not merely a part of news production. We aim to support the public’s access to reliable information.
True Platform collaborates with media outlets, non-governmental organizations, regulatory bodies, academics, and experts in relevant fields. We work toward establishing a robust local network for sharing information, experiences, and ideas to effectively combat misinformation and hate speech.
