A public Facebook page named Deir ez-Zor Media Center recently claimed that Egypt had sent 150 Thunderbolt forces to northern Syria in coordination with government forces.
The page alleged that these forces arrived via Hama Military Airport and were stationed in the town of Khan al-Asal in the western Aleppo countryside and around the city of Saraqib in the southern Idlib countryside.
It further stated that these forces “engaged in battles with Turkish forces in Libya and are expected to play a role in the campaign against the Turkish presence in Syria.”
The True Platform team investigated the matter by using a keyword search on Google. The search revealed that international and Arab media outlets had reported a similar report to Anadolu Agency back in 2020.
According to the research results, both Syrian sources and Egyptian diplomatic sources have nullified the claim that Egypt had deployed military forces to Syria during that period.
The report from the Deir ez-Zor Media Center differs from the previous one by adding that the alleged Egyptian forces had “engaged in battles with Turkish forces in Libya.”
Concerning the transparency of the page, it was noticed that it was initially created under the name Qamishlo Event and then changed its name twice in 2017 to Qamishlo Media Center, later to Rojava Media Center, and finally, in 2018, to Deir ez-Zor Media Center.
A check of the page, which has 76,000 likes and over 100,000 followers, revealed that it has previously published misleading information.
Conclusion:
The claim that Egypt sent 150 Thunderbolt forces to northern Syria is misleading.
